The
Keystone Art & Culture Center (posted
7/24/08)
The Keystone
Art & Culture Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
corporation featuring an arts educational bronze foundry and
art gallery within the city of Lancaster. The Center is an
example of adaptive reuse, being housed in a renovated
warehouse in Lancaster's Southwest neighborhood at 420 Pearl
Street. The Center was created 3years ago to provide access
and opportunity for artists and for the community. Under one
roof, the Center offers art classes, a working bronze
foundry, and regular exhibits of art by local, regional and
international artists. The Center provides real life
learning opportunities for interns who assist professional
artists with their individual projects. Outreach includes
learning tours and hands-on experiences at the Center.
Recently, a school group of 7th and 8th graders were taught
the process of bronze casting by making their own wax
sculptures and then watching as Keystone Art technicians
poured their pieces to become bronze sculptures. Director
George Mummert, a sculptor and art educator, had the vision
for Keystone to provide unique arts experiences for our
region. As a professional sculptor, George has works which
are on display at the Smithsonian Museum and the Peabody
Museum at Yale University. Most recently, he completed a
larger-than-life statue of Thaddeus Stevens in bronze, now
on permanent display in Lancaster. George has made it a
practice to share his experience and expertise with
students, who learn as they assist in all phases of his
work. The current Board of Directors is new and needs help
from both volunteers and potential board members. We are
looking for community minded individuals who have the
following skills or expertise: experience with Quickbooks or
Quicken, general bookkeeping and accounting, marketing, and
development and fundraising, . For more information, please
