The Keystone Art & Culture Center (posted 7/24/08)
The Keystone Art & Culture Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation featuring an arts educational bronze foundry and art gallery within the city of Lancaster. The Center is an example of adaptive reuse, being housed in a renovated warehouse in Lancaster's Southwest neighborhood at 420 Pearl Street. The Center was created 3years ago to provide access and opportunity for artists and for the community. Under one roof, the Center offers art classes, a working bronze foundry, and regular exhibits of art by local, regional and international artists. The Center provides real life learning opportunities for interns who assist professional artists with their individual projects. Outreach includes learning tours and hands-on experiences at the Center. Recently, a school group of 7th and 8th graders were taught the process of bronze casting by making their own wax sculptures and then watching as Keystone Art technicians poured their pieces to become bronze sculptures. Director George Mummert, a sculptor and art educator, had the vision for Keystone to provide unique arts experiences for our region. As a professional sculptor, George has works which are on display at the Smithsonian Museum and the Peabody Museum at Yale University. Most recently, he completed a larger-than-life statue of Thaddeus Stevens in bronze, now on permanent display in Lancaster. George has made it a practice to share his experience and expertise with students, who learn as they assist in all phases of his work. The current Board of Directors is new and needs help from both volunteers and potential board members. We are looking for community minded individuals who have the following skills or expertise: experience with Quickbooks or Quicken, general bookkeeping and accounting, marketing, and development and fundraising, . For more information, please visit our website (www.KeystoneArt.Org) or you may call either the Director, George Mummert (717)870-4689 or the President of the Board, Jim Adams (717)399-1510.

Junior Achievement (posted 2/27/08)

Junior Achievement (JA) invites business and community volunteers to teach its high-quality programs in local classrooms. No teaching background is necessary!

JA has partnered with local schools to bring business, economic and financial literacy education to our students.  A non-profit organization funded by businesses, foundations and individuals, JA is committed to preparing young people for the workforce by educating them about economics, money management and free enterprise.  But we need business volunteers to present the programs and we promise you’ll have fun

Each volunteer is provided with a kit full of lessons plans, visual aids and activities and trained by JA staff to teach one of several interactive, hands-on programs.  There will be a 45-minute training session with JA staff, and, after that, the time commitment is just 30 - 45 minutes a week for 5 weeks.  It’s a small amount of time but it will have a lasting impact on Lancaster County students.  Won’t you join over 370 volunteers who teach Junior Achievement programs to over 9,000 students in Lancaster County?  Share your business knowledge and experience with students this year and have a great time doing it!    Please contact Julie Merrill, Program Manager at (717) 397-5779 or jmerrill@jacentralpa.org.
